Background

The Pink Line mass transit system (Khae Rai - Min Buri) is one of the mass transits planned in Mass Rapid Transit Master Plan in Bangkok Metropolitan Region: M-MAP. The Pink Line network has been planned to accommodate travel demand of the northern Bangkok. According to the M-MAP developed by the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OTP), the Pink Line was assigned as a minor mass transit system in terms of elevated straddle monorail. This project is a monorail system with 34.5 kilometer distance. The MRT Pink line has officially opened for revenue service since December 31st 2023.

The Project Route Alignment (Khae Rai - Min Buri)

MRT Pink line project is elevated straddle type monorail transit which designed to accommodate travel demand of the northern Bangkok between Min Buri district and Nonthaburi. The route start from are near to the Nonthaburi Civic Center and Khae Rai intersection on Rattanathibet road. The first station was connected to the Purple line MRT (Bang Yai – Bang sue). The route head along Tiwanon road to Pak Kret section, then turn right and head along Chaeng Watthana road, passing Muang Thong Thani, government complex commemorating his Majesty and Lak Si intersection which connected to Dark red line. Continuing crossing Don Muang Tollway and head along Ramindra Road crossing and interchange with Green line (Mo Chit – Saphanmai) at Wat Prasrimahathat station. Then, the route continue along Ramindra road crossing Chalong Rat expressway at Watcharaphon intersection and reaches Min Buri intersection. Crossing Ramkhamhaeng road and reaching terminal station at Ramkhamhaeng-Rom Klao intersection, passengers can connect to MRT Orange Line (Taling Chan - Min Buri). The entire length of the Pink Line contains the distance of 34.5 kilometers.

Structure

The pre - cast girder is the most appropriate for the viaduct structure because mostly of the alignment is at the middle of the road median. Typical viaduct structures in Pink Line project mostly are single column with dual track. Standard span, less than 25 meters length, would use prestressed concrete girder. Steel guideway girder can be used in the long span which span length is greater than 25 meters. Substructures of the elevated structures can be divided into 2 types; single column and portal frame. The span length is about 20 – 30 meters. The column is on the 1.5-1.8 meters diameter of pile cap or barrette pile. The distance between centers of beam is about 3.7 meters in the straight line section and increasing in the curve line section.

Stations

There will be 30 stations along the route. Station structure will be an elevated structure type. Platform stations are either lateral or central depends on physical conditions. Certain stations will be integrated with other mass transit lines to allow the transfer of passengers. Escalators, lifts, toilets, information displays, public address and all facilities for the handicap will be equipped.

Depot

Depot at Min Buri is located on the area of approximately 118,400 square meters(229 Rai) near Ramkhamhaeng road between Soi Ramkhamhaeng 192 and Song Ton Nun Canal. As depot is at the terminal station, train will be more convenience to operate. Moreover, P&R facilities at this depot can serve passengers not only the Pink Line but also, the Orange Line because this station is an interchange station between both transit lines.

Park & Ride

1 park and ride building at Min Buri station . Park and ride building capacity is 3,000 cars

Track

Guideway beam will be parallel installed along the route with walkway for passengers evacuation. Conductor rail was mounted along the beam for train power supply. There are 2 type of guideway beam in the project.

     1. Concrete guideway beam – general type of 30 meters beam used in the project.

     2. Steel guideway beam – length 20 – 70 meters, this beam type was used in the limited condition route such as narrow curve radius route and long distance across the canal or junction.

Rolling Stock

The 750 Volts DC rolling stock with 4 cars train will be used since initial phase and might be expanded to be 7 cars train in future operation which can contain passengers around 28,000 passengers per hour per direction.

Rolling Stocks of The Pink and Yellow Line system is the first driverless straddle type monorail in Thailand. Maximum operation speed is 80 km/hr. Train interior was design based on universal design concept which contain facilities and safety features. Overall 42 trainsets contained in this project.

Power Supply System

Monorail Project’s Power Supply System connect to the power supply system with MEA at 115kV through the bulk substations (BSS) which located 2 areas (in Depot area and mainline). BSS convert the voltage 115 kV to 24 kV to distribute to Service Substation ( SSS) which supply the power to all M&E equipment in every stations and Traction Substation (TSS) which convert Alternative current to be 750 V Direct Current through Conductor rail on mainline for rolling stock propulsion.

Systemwide

The signaling and communication of this line will be the same as those of the Chaloem Ratchamongkhon Line.

Depot and Workshop Equipment

Depot and Workshop Equipment are installed/stored within the Main Workshop building. This equipment includes the Maintenance - Inspection Vehicle (MIV), as well as various tools and machinery used for repairing and maintaining the tracks. Among these tools are the 2-ton and 5-ton overhead cranes, the Bogie Maintenance Work Station (BMWS), tire inflation equipment, and cleaning facility such as the Train Wash Plant.

Platform Screen Door

Platform Screen Door System is a set of gates that act as a barrier between the platform and the railway track along the entire length of the platform. This system is implemented for the safety of passengers. The doors used in this project are of the half - height platform screen door type.

Automatic Fare Collection System

Passengers are able to travel in MRT system using single-journey ticket/prepaid ticket or credit cards which be compatible with EMV, where the data is sent to the Clearing House. This helps facilitate the systematic management and monitoring of fare collection.
