Background

       According to the resolution by the Cabinet on March 22th, 2012 and October 20th, 2012, the Ministry of Transport (MOT) was assigned to carry out feasibility study, perform further proceeding in accordant with related laws and regulations, as well as prepare project detailed plan in order to strengthen transportation infrastructure to support tourism industry expansion in the southern provinces along the Gulf of Thailand (Surat Thani Province) and Andaman coast (Phuket province).

       Hence, the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OTP) hired a consultant to study and prepare definitive design and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report of Surat Thani - Phang Nga - Phuket Railway and Phuket Mass Transit System (Phuket International Airport - Chalong Intersection). One objective of such project was to develop high standard and efficient mass transit system to support economic and tourism expansion in Phuket. Furthermore, traffic congestion reduction and prevention was also targeted.

       Later, in the meeting on January 14th, 2016, chaired by the Permanent Secretary of MOT, the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) was assigned to be a responsible unit to implement the Phuket Mass Transit project. After the feasibility study, definitive design and EIA report were complete, all those documents will be handed over to MRTA to study and prepare a report under Public-Private Partnership Act B.E. 2562 (2019) (Private Investments in State Undertakings Act B.E. 2556 (2013)) , conduct market sounding activities and propose to get the approval by the cabinet afterwards.

CharacteristIcs

Alignment
     The project starts at Phuket International Airport. Running along the highway No. 4031, the structure will be elevated. Therefrom, the alignment will be lowered to the at-grade on the highway No. 4026 and continue its path through the highway No. 402, heading toward to Phuket city. After that, the alignment will be lowered to underground level approximately 3 kilometers at Thalang district, before lifted back to the ground level normally and pass Thao Thep Krasattri and Thao Sri Sunthon Monument (The Two Heroines Monument), Phuket bus terminal, Phuket Municipality and Phuket Road, before crossing the Thepsrisin Bridge in order to enter into Chao Fa (East) Road (the highway No. 4021) and terminating its route at Chalong Intersection with the total distance of 42 kilometers.

Structure
     Almost alignment will be at-grade structure, but some parts will be underground structure, at Thalang station, and elevated structure, at Phuket International Airport station.

Railway System
     The railway system will be Light Rail Transit (low floor TRAM). Its typical rolling stock width will be of 2.40 or 2.65 meters and its length will be 30.00 – 40.00 meter.

Station
     There will be 21 stations along the route, including 19 at-grade stations, 1 elevated station and 1 underground station. 

Depot
     Depot of the project will be located at Thalang Station, with approximately 80,204 square meter. The depot will provide essential services for operation and maintenance including full maintenance for supporting daily work, preventive and corrective maintenance, overhaul, mid-life refurbishment and Operation Control Center (OCC).

Park & Ride
     The Park and Ride Building will be located in the area of Chalong Station which can accommodate about 200 - 300 vehicles for motorcycles and cars
