The New Mass Rapid Transit Network

On February 23, 2004, the Commission for the Management of Land and Traffic (CMLT)'s meeting approved the Mass Rapid Transit Master Plan which was purposed by Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OTP) to provides a framework for the development and implementation of the Mass Rapid Transit Network amount 291 km. in Bangkok and its vicinities within 6 years. The network includes (see map attached)

- Existing Network 43.7 km.
- Extension Network 247.3 km

Among the 247.3 km. extension network MRTA is assigned by CMLT to responsible for extension & new line projects for 91 km. that consists of 3 major lines as

1. Blue line : Bang Sue – Tha Phar
    Hua Lamphong – Bang Kae

On September 7, 2004 the cabinet acknowledges CMLT's resolution based on the master plan above.


The Approval of MRTA Extension Project

On September 28, 2004 the Cabinet approves the detailed design and the construction of an initial extension section, the Purple line : Bang Yai - Bang Sue section, which totally costs 46,704 million baht .

The Purple line : Bang Yai - Bang Sue section starts from the north end of the chaloem Ratchamongkhon line at Bang Sue station, then goes toward northwestern to Taopoon intersection, turns right and runs along Krung Thep - Nonthaburi Raod, passes Wongsawang Intersection, then turns right at Nonthaburi intersection to Tiwanon Road and turns left to Ratana Thibed Road at Khae Rai intersection, crosses over the Chao Phaya River at Phranang Klao Bridge and runs along on Ratana Thibed Road, turns right at Bang Yai intersection. The line terminates on the Kanchanapisek Road at Khong Bang Pai area with approximately 23 km long. (see map attached).

There will be 16 elevated central platform stations along the route. The concourse is located below the platform above the road. And this project will has one depot at Khong Bang Pai Area, where is presented to the end of the route. Moreover, there will be 2 Park & Ride at Phra Nong Klao Area and Depot area.

In addition to the project cost is estimated at 46,704 million Baht, MRTA will be responsible for seeking loans from a local financial institutes by Ministry of finance would be a guarantor of the loans.

And the project implementation strategy, the government would be investing both in civil work and M&E Works that can be divided as follows:

Civil Work

:

Viaduct, Station, Lift and Escalators and Station Facilities.

M & E Work

:

Rolling Stock, Signalling and Communication System, Power Supply and Fare Collection System

Furthermore, MRTA would be manages or might assign a private sector in order to operate and provide maintenance of the operation system.

In term of project benefic, the OTC's Study shown that the ridership forecast of purple line about 461,000 passengers per day (Passengers in the year of 2010). The Study also suggested that for the whole network will generate the economic benefit in term of reduction in energy consumption over than 25,595 million baht per year while its economic internal rate of return (EIRR) is estimated at 20.56%.
