| It is expected that the MRT system will be a great success and improve the quality of life of Bangkok residents and visitors alike. To ensure that the system benefits as many people as possible, plans are already in place to extend and expand the service. |

On 23rd March 2004, the cabinet approved a further development plan for the mass transit railway network, both subterranean and overland, throughout Bangkok and its vicinities. It is hoped that the future will see the MRT system cover an area of 291 Kilometress, and have a total of 7 lines. For ease of use, lines will be designated different colours. With an initial investment budget of 446,677 million baht, the project is scheduled to be completed within the next six years.
The MRTA, currently responsible for the M.R.T. Chaloem Ratchamongkhon Line, will operate 3 new lines with a total of 91 kilometres and a budget of 234,871 million baht. The 3 new lines include:

1. Blue Line - 27 kilomoetres
The Hua lamphong - Bang Khae Section will eventually stretch over 14 kilometres the first 5 of which will be underground. Strating at Hua Lamphong Station, the line will follow Charoen Krung Road, passing Wang Burapha, Wat Poh, Pak Khlong Talad, Bangkok Yai, Petch Kasem Road and end at Bang Khae.
The Bang Sue - Tha Phra Section will start from Bang Sue Station, passing along Pracharat Road, then Charansanitwong Road until it reaches Tha Phra Intersection. This section will have an elevated structure with a route length of 13 kilometres and will include 7 elevated stations. |
| 2. Orange Line - 24 kilometres
From Bang Kapi to Bang Bumru - Comprising 21 kilometres of underground lines and 3 kilometres of elevated structure, the Orange Line will include 17 stations. The route will start at Bang Kapi, then pass Lum Salee, Ramkhamhaeng Road, Din Daeng, Victory Monument, Dusit Zoo, Sam Sen, Khrung Thon Buri Bridge and Terminate at Bang Bumru and have a total length of 24 kilometres. |

3. Purple Line - 40 kilometres
From Bang Yai to Rat Burana - This vital line will include 14 kilometres underground track and 26 kilometres of elevated structure. The route will start at Bang Yai, then pass Ratana Thibed, Phra Nang Klao Bridge, Nonthaburi Intersection, Wongsawang Intersection, Tao Poon, Kiak Kai, Sri Yan, Sam Sen, the National Library, Bang Lamphu, Phan Fa, Wong Wian Yai, Mahai Sawan Intersection and terminate at Rat Burana.
